Alberts celebrates 50 years of Albert Productions

Posted on 23 Jul 2014

Alberts celebrates 50 years of its recording label ‘Albert Productions’ with ‘Good Times: Celebrating 50 years of Albert Productions’ Deluxe Edition released Friday August 15th.

There have been frantic times and quiet times over the last 50 years but the Good Times continue to roll at Alberts.

2014 marks the 50th year of one of Australia’s most iconic and respected record labels, Albert Productions.

Alberts and Sony Music Australia are thrilled to be releasing a 102 track compilation titled ‘Good Times: Celebrating 50 years of Albert Productions’ on Friday August 15th.

The hits, legendary songs and hidden gems from the Australian label plus two unreleased tracks, Rose Tattoo’s interpretation of the Jagger and Richards classic ‘Street Fighting Man’ and a demo of The Easybeats’ ‘She’s So Fine’ make up songs from the 5-CD Box Set. The latter unreleased recording from the Alberts archive features a very young Stevie Wright calling in the song with “Take 2” before the band lay down their song for only the second time ever.  Handpicked from the local catalogue, the Deluxe Edition includes studio and live recordings, and is titled after the original Easybeats 1968 recording ‘Good Times’ written by Harry Vanda and George Young.

'To survive 10 years in the music business is an achievement. To survive 50 years - and thrive during the process - is something else entirely and requires many talents, not least of all integrity. Its founder, Ted Albert, had that in abundance, as it does his successor, David Albert. Long may it continue' George Young

Rarely seen images, a historical look at the music and the story of the legendary label’s five decades are all captured in an accompanying 48 page booklet and will be available as part of the physical release of the Deluxe Edition.

‘Good Times: Celebrating 50 years of Albert Productions’ begins with Albert Productions first ever release in August 1964, Billy Thorpe and The Aztecs ‘Mashed Potato’ (with a total of three words in the lyrics) and includes the label’s most recent release, the late Doc Neeson’s rendition of Flash And The Pan’s ‘Walking In The Rain’.  Among the many other artists to feature on the release are Australia’s most successful artist AC/DC plus The Angels, Alex Hood, The Imagination, Dallas Crane, Knievel,  Seabellies, Flash And The Pan and John Paul Young with his recording of evergreen hit ‘Love Is In the Air’.

Launched in 1964, Albert Productions is the recording arm of the 129-year-old music company J. Albert & Son and has been a vital force in Australian music for 50 years. The label, unlike any other in Australia, is the result of one man’s love of rock and roll.  Ted Albert, then MD of Alberts (and a fourth generation Albert), decided after witnessing local teenagers high on surf culture and ‘Beatlemania’ that his family business should become involved in music production and build a worthy record label with a catalogue of Australian songs and artists.

Throughout the five decades, Albert Productions has topped Australian and international charts, elevated local performers and producers to the world platform, won numerous ARIA awards including ARIA Hall of Fame recognition, and continued its vision for music of integrity and consistent quality.

This collection of songs will rank as one of the most collectable Australian sets in contemporary music culture from the independent label with its extraordinary history and who believes that ‘It’s All About The Song’.
