September 18, 2009 marks the release of a newly packaged collection of hits from John Paul Young, I HATE THE MUSIC. With an illustrious career spanning 40 years, John's chart success and iconic popularity, proves that we indeed LOVE his music!
I HATE THE MUSIC is an 18 track compilation of John's recording highlights opening with The Easybeats' St. Louis, a song featured on the HERO album. It was the song Pasadena, a Harry Vanda/George Young/David Hemmings creation, released in 1971 that was to launch JPY, as he became known, on the path to being one of the biggest stars of the 70's.
Having showcased his talents on the stage in the '74 production of Jesus Christ Superstar, it was his next single, Yesterday's Hero, that would top the Australia charts and crack the US Top 50. Fame would also unexpectedly cross the shores to South Africa where a tour in '77 would match the hysteria John was experiencing back in Australia. With the help of regular appearances on ABC TV's Countdown, his Top 20 debut album HERO, sold in excess of 70,000 copies.
The next two singles, The Love Game and I Hate The Music were followed by the release of his second album, JPY, which repeated the platinum sales success.
But it was the song Love Is In The Air that would catapult JPY onto the worldwide stage. Released in 1978, reaching Top 5 in many countries around the globe, it would be the 1992 remix, featured in the movie, Strictly Ballroom, that would relaunch John's career. The song continues to feature regularly on the airwaves today.
Receiving the honour last month of joining the ARIA Hall of Fame, John said, "It's a great honour for a little boy from Glasgow. I've just got to thank my lucky stars that my dad had the foresight to get the hell out of there. I've been really fortunate, this has really been the Lucky Country for me and always will be."
